Chino Valley got its name in the middle 1800s from the Spanish word for the grama grass which grows abundantly in the area.

The railroad played an important role in the history of the town when the narrow gauge United Verde and Pacific Railroad created Jerome Junction, eventually absorbed into the town of Chino Valley.
