In this episode Peter Higgin’s father in law (Lionel Jeferies) is made compulsarily redundant. As a past military man he is distraught at the news. Peter gives him an interest in gardening, which he pursues with some vigour, but little success. What little success there is boils down to a single melon plant.

In a sub plot to this rather weak plot, Peter’s wife Sally is organising a car rally through Shillingbury. The rally is opposed by local farmer Jake, who happens to be looking after the local Lord of the Manor’s dog. The three themes – rally, dog and garden – come to a conclusion when the dog runs out in front of the rally causing the cars to swerve off the road and through the garden.

All of the shots for this episode are in Aldbury and are the same ones as described in waymark WMBV0W. For this episode there is an additional major location outside Aldbury. Stock’s Farmhouse is the location of Peter’s father in law's garden.
