The MAY OAK, E. Park Ave. and Gadsden St., is Tallahassee's most honored tree, around which annual May Day festivals have been held for more than a century. --- Florida A Guide to the Southernmost State, 1939 (Part II. Principal Cities - Tallahassee)

The bronze plaque by the May Oak stump reads:

TALLAHASSEE'S MAY OAK

LEWIS PARK

The Tallahassee May Day Festival, one of the oldest annual celebrations in Florida, was held under the stately May Oak from 1844 to 1974. The historic landmark collapsed on August 9, 1986.
