Limestone springs, such as Model Spring, are located throughout LBL. These springs occur at the base of many limestone formations where they crop out on escarpments and hillsides. This aquifer system is composed of Ft. Payne limestone of the Lower Missippian Period.
This area was first called Pryor's Creek, named for the first settler who came into the area, in or about 1800. Later, the community was known as Great Western for the Great Western Furnace established about 1854 by Brian, Newell and Company and lasted a few short yearsuntil 1857.
After the Civil War a "model town" was established as a real estate operation by the Cincinnati Cooperage Company, a maker of barrel staves, and that is how Bass passed through the fiery furnace, and the community became known as Model. Model lasted until 1967, the year that LBL was finally handed over to the operation by TVA.
