The jaw bone of a bowhead whale presented to Dr Cooper in 1820, by his friend Mr Stanton after being caught in the Davis Strait, near Greenland.
The jaw bones were presented to the town in 1906 and erected in the Workman Gardens.
Until recently it was possible to walk under the arch, but it is now fenced off.
A scale model of a bowhead whale is visible on the grass in front of the arch.
