Dave Allen At Large was a highly successful comedy show that combined stand up comedy with sketches filmed on location. One of the best known and loved filmed sketches is the funeral directors sketch. The sketch was silent and relied totally on visual humour.
The sketch starts with two funeral corteges walking on foot along the same path to the church. Both funeral directors are anxious to get to the churchyard first. They start to walk faster and faster and begin shoving each other out of the way. One funeral director purloins a pram to put the coffin on, whilst the other commandeers a small car to transport the coffin. The group with the pram nearly come unstuck when they decide to stop at the pub on the way, the pram and coffin careering into the pond. Things come to a head when both groups arrive, from different directions, at the church gate. After a lot of shoving the two groups admit defeat when they realise that a third group has beaten both of them to the churchyard.
