A long time friend of Mrs Peel, Major Croft decides to retire to the sleepy village of Little Storping. The Major sends his butler on ahead to arrange the removal. The butler is murdered by the village inhabitants, as is the Major when he arrives. They are murdered to preserve the village’s deadly secret, that the village can be hired for people to settle grudges without questions being asked. Victims are lured to the village and then murdered by their enemies, the villagers getting a fee for disposing of the bodies.

Mrs Peel has been invited to join the Major and when she arrives in the village the villagers deny ever having seen the Major. Emma investigates and soon gets herself trapped in the village. The villagers are afraid that Mrs Peel might be missed and use a ducking stool by the village pond to extract information from her. She tells them that Steed, her husband, will miss her. They allow her to make a call to Steed, which alerts Steed to her plight.

Not all villagers are in on the plot. The vicar and doctor and telephonist did not go along with the plot. They are held captive in the village museum, where Mrs Peel is taken. She manages to get free, and with the help of Steed, the villagers are brought to justice.
