The area around here was a hunting forest for the owners of Skipton Castle. Nearby is Barden Tower, their hunting lodge re-built in 1485.
This bridge was built in 1659 and carries the road from Barden Tower across the River Wharfe to the village of Appletreewick.
These days it carries road traffic, but is only wide enough for one car. It’s a good job that this is a quiet road with little traffic. On the bridge are a number of passing places for pedestrians.
If you want to visit the bridge there is a small free car park at the Eastern side of the bridge.
