This bridge looks big enough to be a road bridge. However it simply carries a water pipe from a reservoir to supply the City of Bradford.

Victorian engineers tended to do things on a grand scale and turned this bridge into a crenulated masterpiece.

The bridge is on the Bolton Abbey estate, which belongs to Lord Devonshire. Although a private estate there are many public access footpaths alongside the River Wharfe. This bridge therefore comes in useful for walkers to get from one side of the river to the other.

The bridge has 3 large arches across the river, and on the Southern bank a small arch so that walkers can pass underneath it whilst walking along the river. The arch on North bank looks wider than necessary, but this is to deal with the times when river is in flood.
