Since 1945, when McGill University acquired the property, the Morgan Arboretum has been the site of teaching, research, and public education related to the management of woodland resources as well as being an important recreational facility for the people who come to visit and spend time in this beautiful site.
The Arboratum supports 18 collections of trees and shrubs from across the world, that include fir, oak, birch, maple, linden, spruce and flowering trees. It is also home to 30 species of mammals, 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, and over 170 species of migratory and overwintering birds.
The Morgan Arboretum has 25 km of trails which can be used for walking, skiing, snowshoeing and birding. One highly popular activity is the production of maple syrup using traditional collection and production methods. The public is invited every spring to a traditional sugaring off.
The Arboratum is supported by both McGill and a charity, the Morgan Arboretum Association. There is an active members organisation, The Friends of the Morgan Arboretum which had 2000 members as of 2010. Visitors are welcomed and are charged a nominal $5.00 admission fee.
