The tower gets its name from the French map maker, Joseph N. Nicollet (pronounced "Nick-o-LAY") who was a sort of real-life Lt. Dunbar in the movie "Dances With Wolves". He spent 1838 and 1839 creating the first accurate map of the vast area between the Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers.
