The coal mining industry has always played a large part in the economy of Helper. But an even larger part has been played by the railroad, providing a measure of economic stability during boom and bust cycles in mining.
If you live in Helper, you just have to love trains. With a 2.5% grade climbing from Helper to Soldier Summit, all freight trains require "helper" locomotives to provide the necessary power to make their way to the top, giving rise to the name of the town. And all that power being expended echoes off the canyon walls day and night.
