At first glance this Doughboy appears to be in good shape, but a closer look confirms the description on doughboysearcher: "The Doughboy suffers from pitting and quite a bit of discoloration. The base is stained. The Doughboy could benefit from a cleaning...and could probably benefit from other restorative work."
Still, given that the Peru Doughboy has stood at the corner of a busy intersection in the center of town since 1930, it could be worse. Other than a missing rifle sling and the noted pitting and discoloration, the statue is in fair condition. It carries Viquesney's Spencer nameplate.
Sitting on its base of rough-hewn granite, this Doughboy forms a very simple war memorial. The plaque on the front carries the inscription "Greater Love Hath No Man Than This", an abbreviated version of John 15:13: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Following are the names of the Miami County war dead.
Where is this statue located?: Courthouse Property
