Thurgood Marshall was born on July 2, 1908 in Baltimore. He graduated from Howard University Law School and started working as legal counsel for the Baltimore Chapter of the NAACP. During his time as an NAACP Lawyer he argued a number of cases before the United States Supreme Court including the case of Brown v. Board of Education (Topeka, Kansas.) In 1961 he was appoint by President Kennedy to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He also served as the first African American Solicitor General from 1965 – 1967. In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson nominated Marshall to the United States Supreme Court. He was confirmed by the Senate on August 30, 1967, becoming the courts first African American Associate Justice. Justice Marshall served on the Supreme Court for 24-years, retiring on October 1, 1991. Justice Thurgood Marshall died on January 24, 1993 and is resting in Section 5 – Lot 40-3 in Arlington National Cemetery.

Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1908. He graduated Frederick Douglass High School in 1925 and went on to graduate from Lincoln University in 1930. He obtained his law degree in 1933 from Howard University, graduating first in his class. In 1936 Marshall set up a private practice in Baltimore in 1936 and started working with the Baltimore Chapter of the NAACP. During his time as legal counsel for the NAACP he argued several cased before the United States Supreme Court. His most famous argument as a lawyer was the case of Brown v. Board of Education. In this case the court ruled that “separate but equal,” public education as established in a previous case was not applicable to public education because it could never be truly equal. Overall he argued more cases before the Supreme Court than anyone else in history, winning 29 of the 32 case he argued. In 1961 President John Kennedy appointed Marshall to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Due to senate opposition he served as a recess appointment for several months. Marshall remained on the second circuit until 1965 when President Lyndon Johnson appointed him Solicitor General. On June 13, 1967, President Johnson nominated Marshall to the United States Supreme Court to replace the retiring Justice Tom C. Clark. On August 30, 1967, Justice Marshall was confirmed by the Senate becoming the 96th Associate Justice the courts first African American Justice. Justice Marshall served on the Court for the next 24 year, becoming a strong advocate for the Constitutional protection of individual rights. Justice Marshall retired from the court on October 1, 1991 and continued to live in the Washington until his death on January 24, 1993. Justice Thurgood Marshall is resting in Arlington National Cemetery.
