The Peoria YWCA built in 1928 is significant for the role it played in the social history of Peoria. The building provided recreational and housing opportunities for young women who often moved to Peoria a growing industrial city seeking work or training. The YWCA filled a gap as most jobs were low paying and the available low cost boarding houses were reserved for men thus the downtown YWCA provide safe affordable housing. As Peoria became more "suburbanized" the downtown location became less and less used and faced financial difficulties. The building has now been converted to low cost apartments.
