William Rehnquist was born on October 1, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After serving in the U. S. Army Air Force during World War II, Rehnquist attended Stanford and Harvard Universities and served as a law clerk for Justice Robert Jackson. President Richard Nixon nominated Rehnquist to the United States Supreme Court and on January 7, 1972 he assumed the bench as an Associate Justice. Justice Rehnquist had served as an Associate Justice for 14-years when President Richard Nixon nominated him to become Chief Justice. On September 26, 1986, Justice William Rehnquist became the 16th Chief Justice of the United States. He served as Chief Justice for 19-years, the fourth longest in the courts history. Chief Justice Rehnquist died on September 3, 2005, and is resting in Arlington National Cemetery.

William Rehnquist was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 1, 1924. After graduating from high school, he attended Kenyon College for one year before enlisting in the United States Army Air Force. During World War II he served as a weather observer in North Africa. Following the war he attended Stanford University and received his masters from Harvard University. He served as a law clerk for Justice Robert H. Jackson of the Supreme Court of the United States during the 1951 and 1952 terms, and practiced law in Phoenix, Arizona from 1953–1969. He served as Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel from 1969–1971. President Richard Nixon nominated him to the United States Supreme Court, and following confirmation by the Senate he assumed the position of Associate Justice on January 7, 1972. After serving as an Associate Justice for 14-years, Justice Rehnquist was nominated as Chief Justice by President Ronald Reagan. On September 26, 1986, Justice William Rehnquist became the 16th Chief Justice of the United States. In 1999, Chief Justice Rehnquist became only the second Chief Justice to preside over a presidential impeachment. He presided over the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in the U. S. Senate. Chief Justice Rehnquist’s 19-year tenure as Chief Justice is the fourth longest in the history of the court. William Hubbs Rehnquist died of thyroid cancer on September 3, 2005. He is resting in Section 5 – Lot 7049 at Arlington National Cemetery.
