The Inselzoo is the only zoo in Germany that is located on an isle.
The isle is located in the Großer Teich (great lake) at the southern border of the historic city center.

The isle was man-made in 1720/21 and it was a place for regeneration for duke Friedrich II. In the history the isle was used in several ways, such as a place for regeneration for the people of Altenburg with a restaurant on it.

The zoo itself was openend in 1954 and since the 1990s there were some structural alteration works to advance the living conditions for the animals.

There are 11 mammal species, 34 bird species, 27 fish species, 11 reptile species, 7 amphibian species and 13 invertebrate species you can look at.
