The climb to the Soldier's Memorial Plaza on the Lincoln University quadrangle is steep. Two bronze figures approaching the monument's central feature make for perfect stand-by-me photo ops to remember the men who helped found the institution.

Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri was founded in
1866 with contributions and the vision by officers and enlisted men of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantries of the Union army. The new Soldiers' Memorial is a central feature on the campus of this historically black university.

"This monument is a symbolic reminder of the close connection
Lincoln University has to the military. In 1891 Lincoln became
a land grant institution under the Second Morill Act of 1890" said the university president at the monument's dedication. It is a permanent monument to their vision and foresight.

The "outliers"-- the two larger-than-life free standing bronze soldiers sculpture marching from "the field of battle"--
approach the central focus of the monument. They provide
an excellent photo opportunity for a "stand-by me" memories
for students, faculty and visitors to give these soldiers a hand in their climb.

So, in visiting a wellness fair at the nearby Scruggs Student Center,
several of us walked over to the steps to give the two
bronze soldiers a hand in their climb on a very warm day in May 2011.

It was a spur of the moment idea that I hope will catch on
because the Soldiers' Memorial is on the top 10 list of Civil
War attractions to see in Jefferson City for the sesquicentennial
of the Civil War in Missouri that has started in 2011 and will
continue until 2015 here.
