An old barn is being overgrown as Mother Nature reclaims her property on the
Hogue Tract of the
Chester F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area in Fauquier County, Virginia. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries acquired the property from the county in 1981, but scant information can be found about its history or any prior landowners.
The barn surprisingly retains much of its red paint 30+ years later, but that could be attributed to the thick foliage coverage that helps to protect it from the sun. An article from the Free-Lance Star about Hogue Tract published 11/21/2003 states that a bamboo thicket and ground cover are evidence the area was once a homestead, but interestingly, no mention is made of the barn.
Hogue Tract has an accessible loop trail but is reserved for disabled hunters October 1 to January 31. It is open to the general public and on any Sunday the rest of the year.
