The Crookhaven River is very short but has a deep & navigable mouth.
The nearby Shoalhaven River is very long, shallow & until 1822 its mouth was at Shoalhaven Heads just to the north. Its mouth was extremely dangerous & the cause of many deaths by drowning. A canal was built to connect the two rivers & now the Shoalhaven River flows into the ocean via the Crookhaven River. Often people just refer to it as being the mouth of the Shoalhaven River.
I took the Crookhaven Lighthouse Walking Track to a point directly above the mouth of the river (southern side). There is a rock platform below however it is not safe to walk on as waves break over it even at low tide. A rocky spit projects into the sea as the last point of contact with land.
There is a breakwall on the opposite side however it does not project as far into the sea as the point where I took my reading.
