Elmer B. Powell Jr. DVM
Jan 20, 1919 - Mar 8, 1984
Former POW Bataan Death March
Make me ever ready to come to you with
clean hands and straight eye so that when
life fades as the fading sunset, my spirit
may come to you without shame.
From an article in the Arizona Republic:
More current interments include Elmer B. Powell, a former prisoner of war in World War II who was in the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. Powell cheated death more than once, according to Paul Messinger, 75, of Messinger Mortuaries and Chapels.
"He was the veterinarian here in Scottsdale and he should have been killed about eight different times," Messinger said. "He was a Flying Tiger and shot down two different times, was sunk in a boat, was near where the atom bomb was dropped and got radiation sickness, was in another two airplane crashes in Arizona and finally lost his life to old age in 1984.
