St. Charles was established as a town in 1765 as Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills) by French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette. It was the last "civilized" stop for Lewis and Clark on their expedition. The historic district now has many shops and is popular with tourists and locals alike due to it quaint setting.
