Two castles were built on this mould.
The first in the 13th century, the second one after the destruction of the former, in the 15th century.
After the 1715 Jacobite uprising, four barracks were built on strategic locations. Ruthven was one of them.
In 1746, the occupying Jacobites left the barracks and set it on fire. The remains have barely changed since.
