The historic Klondike Bridge still spans the Big Sioux River which divides Iowa from South Dakota. It was used for automobile traffic in days when Klondike was an inhabited community but is now blocked at both ends limiting its use to pedestrians. Today all that remains of this area is the Klondike Bridge, the remains of an old flour mill and a popular spot for fishing. A public access provides a place to launch a canoe or kayak and a trail to portage around the dam.
The Klondike Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 under the #98000510. It has an historical significance of “architecture/engineering” and was constructed by Western Bridge and Construction Co., and the Iowa State Highway Commission. Its area of significance is classified as “engineering” during the time period of 1900-1924. Its historic function is road-related transportation.
