St. Nicholas is Suttons ancient parish church and must be one of the two churches in Sutton recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086.
It was a favourite haunt of mine in my teenage years (pun intended) with it's proximity to the town centre, the library (its cafe had video games machines and a cool music section) and in later years the bars and clubs on the high street.
Anyway a little history and information:
One of the triumvirate of churches in central Sutton the others being Trinity and Sutton Baptist, this is the only church with a cemetery of the three though. It is located in a surprising little spot, hemmed in by the Library on the East side, to the South is a Holiday inn and car park and to the West is a Multi Storey Car Park. The remaining North face is right on the One Way system which at peak times and weekends is very busy.
Yet despite its modern neighbours, you find yourself in a little oasis of calm. The history in the graveyard is great, if you like that sort of thing. From family tombs to very, very old headstones this graveyard has it all, Crosses, Angels, Memorials, Rune stones good examples of them all.
The church has a very interesting past including being damaged during WW2. The website HERE has more facts and figures. It is a safe site so have no worries about following the link!
I happened to visit it (looking for another Waymark coincidentally) early on a Bank Holiday Monday so the area was quieter than usual and I was able to explore to my heart’s content without being disturbed.
I actually took 20+ photographs and could have taken more! When you have finished here the High Street is only 150m away with all the delights of a modern town centre on offer. Alternatively the Trinity Church across the road is worth a visit. Please use the pedestrian lights whichever way you wander.
