The best way to see Alaska is on the railroad and the Denali Star is the Alaska Railroad's flagship train. It a semi-luxury, passenger train with single level coaches and observation dome cars. It is a seasonal train, only operating between the months of May and September. The train is very famous for the stunning scenery it passes and is ridden by many tourists visiting the Denali National Park.
The Denali Star runs between Fairbanks and Anchorage and back with stops in Denali National Park and Talkeetna. Although the trip is only about 356 miles, it takes 10-12 hours to travel between Anchorage and Fairbanks as the tracks wind through mountains and valleys; the train's top speed is 59 miles per hour but sometimes hovers closer to 30 miles per hour.
Onboard service includes food & beverage, tour guides, baggage service, no-smoking cars, and wheelchair access. Various flight and bus tours are available along the way.
From September to May, the Alaska Railroad operates the Aurora Winter Train on weekends. The trains travels north from Anchorage on Saturday and returns on Sunday. This train provides flag stop service between Talkeetna and Hurricane. Due to the nature of this service, schedule times will vary.
