The Cambrian main rail line runs from Shrewsbury in England to Pwellhi in Wales. Much of the route is single track. This station used to have two platforms but only one is now in use.

The trains are operated by Arriva Trains Wales and in 2009 they introduced a service that connected to the large city of Birmigham in England.

The line was originally opened in 1864 as the Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast Railway.

Criccieth is a small town which is mainly a tourist seaside resort.

The old disused station buildings have been decorated with a number of murals, most with a seaside theme. The station is unstaffed and it is necessary to purchase tickets on the train.

The station has a small free car park.
