The Old Globe Theatre was recognized with the 1984 Tony for Best Regional Theatre. In recent years, several productions have premiered in this theatre before going to Broadway. The award is encased in a plastic box in the lobby of the theatre.
Originally built for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition.... the theatre produced 50 minute versions of Shakespeare's plays! There are now two additional theaters in this complex...and most of the Shakespeare plays are performed in the outdoor Festival Theatre.
