CITYGARDEN is a project of the City of St. Louis and is located on 3 acres in the heart of downtown, with free admission to visit the wandering paved paths past tagged/identified trees and plants, a variety of artwork and sculpture, a man-made waterfall, reflecting pool, a spray plaza and incredible views of the city itself, with the Gateway Arch and the Old Courthouse within view.
The garden is designed with 3 "bands" or "neighborhoods" all within the same 3 acres, with the features sprinkled throughout. The bands are called The Northern River Bluffs Band, the Middle Floodplain Band and the Southern River Terrace Band. The bands represent the various geographic areas in Missouri, for instance, the Middle Floodplain Band has a rock wall that has been constructed using 1,200 locally quarried blocks of limestone and a dark granite path using the materials that are found in that geographic area of Missouri.
There are 23 pieces of numbered art/sculpture that are discribed in the guided map, also. The artwork ranges from the kinetic "Four Rectangles Oblique" that is powered by motors, to the interative "Untitled-Two Rabbits" that seem to call visitors over to sit on them for a photo.
The plants and trees are tagged with descriptive, informative markers, all throughout the garden. The walking map describes the 235 trees (20 different species), 89 species of plants, 1,170 shrubs, 4,109 perennials, native grasses, wildflowers, 8,000 bulbs, 12,726 groundcovers.
For those who prefer to hear the tour via Audio means, you can use your mobile phone to dial 314-802-9571 (or download to your MP3 player from citygardest.org) to hear a recorded tour of the garden's museum-quality sculptures, to be entertained by the voice of a Hall of Fame baseball player, the star of a hit TV show, and a Grammy award-winning recording artist. After dialing in, walk to the sculpture and press the number on your phone that corresponds to the number on the provided walking map, or use the number embedded near the sculpture, plus the number 01. To hear more about the artist/narrator, press the number of the sculpture plus 02. Use the # key to stop the audio.
