The city of Surat Thani is located on the Tapi river, and is centrally located to a number of tourists spots in the province of Surat Thani. Thus the city has a fair sized pier for ferries and small ships.
The Ban Don Pier is located near the centre of the town, easily reached by public transport. The pier area is maybe 50m long, space for two 'big' tourist ships. There are also a host of small craft which ply the local trade back and forth, and up and down the river.
The tourist ferries come and go at all hours, there is one late evening departure for the resort island of Koh Samui, however, most of the local traffic ceases after nightfall. There is no ferry building, nor sign, nor associated facilities, but across the river side street (Tapee River st) are a host of restaurants and service facilities.
