A pair of sundials decorates the south corner church in the hill village of Moltifao above the Asco Valley. The church faces south east so the morning and afternoon sundials are a balanced pair. The gnomons are in place and correctly oriented. The trademark for l’Atelier Tournesol (The Sunflower Workshop) is in the bottom left of the southwest facing afternoon sundial. These are large sundials about 5 ft wide by 6 ft high (1.7 x 2 m). The subtle colours and decorations make these very attractive sundials.
The south east facing morning sundial has hour lines from 6 am to 2 pm. The motto in Corsican is, “ E DIU INCHIARISCE A STRADA DI OMU” or perhaps “God inscribes the way for mankind”
The south west facing afternoon sundial has hour lines from 9 am to 6 pm and numbers from 10 to 5. The motto in French is ““LE SOLIEL TRACE DES RAYONS D’HEURES” or “The rays of the sun trace the hours”.
Moltifao (Multifu) is a hill village, above the Asco Valley, before the gorges of the Asco. The major mountains of Corsica line this scenic valley: Monte Padro (2393 m) to the north and Monte Cinto (2706 m), Capo a u Perdato (2586 m),Capo Bianco (2554 m), Capa Razino (2268 m), Cima a I Mori (2180 m) and many others peaks to the south. There is an orientation table above town near the ancient “Couvent San Francescu di Caccia” (1510 AD). Also at the church site there is a war memorial, bell tower, Calvary, and trailhead.
