An American woman, Patricia Carroll arrives in London to get married to Alan Glentower. She decides to visit the mother, Mrs Trefoile, of a previous fiancé, Stephen, who died some time ago, in order to pay her respects. She arrives at a somewhat run down and secluded house. Mrs Trefoile is incredibly religious and it becomes apparent that Mrs Trefoile blames Patricia for her son’s death. With the aid of her two servants, Harry and Anna, Mrs Trefoile keeps Patricia captive in order to cleanse her soul before she is re-united with Stephen in heaven.

Patricia has several attempts to escape, to no avail. On the final attempt Mrs Trefoile blames Harry and she kills him. At this stage Alan arrives in the village and goes to see Mrs Trefoile, who tells Alan that Patricia has left. Alan returns to the village pub and notices that the barmaid has one of Patricia’s broaches that Harry has given to her. Alan returns to the house in time to save Patricia, just as she is about to be murdered by Mrs Trefoile. The film ends with Mrs Trefoile knifed in the back, presumably by Anna in revenge for Harry’s death.

The village used as the setting for this film is actually Letchmore Heath. Patricia is seen passing the Three Horseshoes public house and Alan goes there to enquire where Mrs Trefoile lives. Alan goes to the local shop to enquire about Mrs Trefoile at the same time Anna goes shopping.
