A wealthy businessman, Marvin Chase, survives a car crash, but is badly burned trying to rescue his assistant from the car. Chase is bandaged and being looked after at home by his doctor. The businessman’s secretary, Nora Prescott, suspects fraud and rings her old friend the Saint. The Saint agrees to meet her at the local pub, but, before they meet, she gets murdered.
The Saint investigates the case and finds that Chase’s daughter also has suspicions. The daughter tells him that the car clock stopped at 11:09, but a postman tells Simon that the car crashed spot on 11:00. The postman further reveals that the car crashed just outside the doctor’s house and that the doctor took Chase directly back to his house, where the doctor treats him and guards Chase from visitors.
Matters come to a head when Chase’s brother is murdered just outside Chase’s bedroom. The Saint solves the mystery: the man in the bandages is not Chase, but his assistant. Chase’s assistant had intended to liquidate Chase’s investments and then run off with Chase’s wife.
The local pub is actually The Three Horseshoes, Letchmore Heath. The Saint visits twice, once to meet Nora Prescott and again to meet Chase’s daughter.
