Manchester, named for Manchester, England, is located on the Merrimack River which provided power to many industries including the largest textile mill in the world. It is also gateway to northern New England, and also to Boston, just an hour south.
The welcome sign bear the seal of the city etched into granite.
At the top an arm hold a hammer with the words, "labor vincit," (labor conquers).
The panels of the seal depict the Connecticut River not far from this sign, mill machinery, and at the bottom the Monadnock Mills, once the largest textile mill in the United States. Many of the old buildings are still standing on both sides of the river.
