The railway is the Fairbourne Miniature Railway.

It was originally a horse drawn construction tramway that carried building materials between Fairbourne and Penrhyn Point 2 miles along the coast.

It was constructed in 1895 as a 2 foot (610 mm) gauge railway. It has been run with a variety of different gauges but currently uses a 12 ¼ inch (311 mm) gauge.

After the mainline opened nearby in 1865 together with the bridge to Barmouth in 1867 it was hoped that Fairbourne would be developed as a major tourist attraction. Passengers have been using the line for over a hundred years, but passenger numbers have declined since the 1970s.

The line has changed ownership a number of times but the current owners purchased it in 1995.

Most of the engines on the line are steam trains and are scale models of real engines.

The end of the line connects with a small foot passenger ferry that crosses the Mawddach Estuary to Barmouth.

The station has a cafe and souvenir shop on the platform. There is also a large G scale model railway on site.

Across the road from this station is a mainline rail station on the Cambrian Coast Line between Shrewsbury in England to Pwellhi in Wales.
