The Botanical Garden of Barcelona is a municipal institution that provides a service to society. The Garden maintains Mediterranean plant collections from around the world. Its main objectives prominently include the conservation and documentation of Catalonia's natural heritage. At the same time, the Garden acts as a source of information on natural and botanical culture, promoting knowledge through activities designed for all kinds of groups, from enthusiasts to professionals in general, as well as for schools. This dissemination raises awareness among the public and promotes interest in and respect for nature.

From a scientific perspective, the Garden receives the support of the Botanical Institute of Barcelona. The Institute is a centre that is jointly owned (Barcelona City Council and the Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) and devoted to botanical research. A centre of consolidated prestige, it has an important library and one of the largest herbaria in Catalonia.

The Botanical Garden of Barcelona is located on the mountain of Montjuïc, between the castle and the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, on a steeply sloping plot (140 m above sea level at its highest point and 100 m at its lowest). In shape it resembles a large amphitheatre facing north-west and it covers a surface area of some 14 hectares. It offers magnificent views over the Llobregat delta, the Olympic Ring and a large part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, with the mountains of the Garraf massif and the Collserola and Marina mountain ranges forming the backdrop.

Since the year 2000, the Association of Town Councils of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area has been in charge of maintaining the Garden. Its main aim is to make it a model and reference point for the entire metropolitan parks network. Thus, it is experimenting with applying new technologies to park maintenance and is doing research into plants characterised by their adaptation to Mediterranean gardening of a sustainable nature.
