Lambert International Airport in St. Louis closed Saturday April 23, 2011 after a tornado swept through a terminal, injuring several people with flying glass.
The busiest terminal at the airport sustained heavy damage from tornado winds that blew out many of the windows and also removed sections of the concourse roof.
The National Weather Service meteorologists confirmed Saturday it was a tornado that struck the airport.
"This landmark facility has taken a direct hit from a natural disaster," said U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., at a Saturday morning news conference at Lambert. "We have reached out to the president to see what assistance we can get from FEMA."
Luckily, only five people received minor injuries and were taken to the hospital from Lambert, and an unspecified number of others were treated at the scene for cuts due to the flying glass.
