This Union Soldier, loading his gun (missing), stands on top of the monument to the 24th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863.

Inscription: (Front of base, in raised, polished lettering:) 24TH/WISCONSIN/INFANTRY/LYTLE'S BRIGADE/SHERIDAN'S DIVISION/MCCOOK'S CORPS (Bronze medallion on side of base:) WISCONSIN unsigned

Description: A uniformed Civil War soldier stands loading his rifle. He holds the rifle (missing) with his proper left hand at waist level. His upraised proper right hand originally held a ramrod, now missing. The soldier has a moustache and wears a brimmed hat, and has pouches on his rear waist. A sheathed sword is on his proper left hip. The soldier is mounted upon a sloping base decorated with a star on the top of each face. On one side of the base is a medallion with the State of Wisconsin seal. The bottom tier of the base is rough-edged.

Remarks: The monument commemorates the involvement of the 24th Wisconsin Infantry, Lytle's Brigade, Sheridan's Division, McCook's Corps at the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. It marks the position held by the regiment during the battle. It was placed by the State of Wisconsin. IAS files contain related excerpt from Jack Kerr's "Monuments and Markers of the 29 States Engaged at Chickamauga and Chattanooga," Collegedale, TN: The College Press, n.d.; copy of Georgia Historic Resources 1988 form, Historic Preservation Section, Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The monument is on the National Park List of Classified Structures No. 03248. IAS files contain a copy of the LCS report form.
