The Cambrian main rail line runs from Shrewsbury in England to Pwellhi in Wales. Much of the route is single track. At this station though it is double tracked to allow trains to pass. There are 2 working platforms.
The trains are operated by Arriva Trains Wales and in 2009 they introduced a service that connected to the large city of Birmigham.
The line was originally opened in 1864 as the Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast Railway.
Porthmadog used to have a busy port shipping slate across the world, and so was quite a bustling town. These days it is mainly a tourist seaside resort.
There are 2 other train stations in the town, on what are now heritage narrow gauge railways. Both lines used to carry the slate.
The station is therefore popular with people wishing to visit the heritage railways. The Welsh Heritage Railway has a station just across the road from this main line station. Further down the road at the harbour is the more famous Ffestiniog narrow gauge railway.
Part of the original station buildings now contain a pub called Station Inn ‘The Pub On The Platform’.
The station has a free car park.
