A bit about Rev. Martin Luther King from Wikipedia: Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African American civil rights movement. He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. King is often presented as a heroic leader in the history of modern American liberalism.
The memorial is in Madison due to Madison being an activist, liberal, college town in an otherwise centrist state notwithstanding the recent right-wing takeover (?) of the legislature and governor's office. It is also witness to the summer weekly Farmer's Market and the annual Art Fair Off the Square. The square being 2 blocks away is the set of streets surrounding the State Capitol Building and is home to the annual Art Fair On the Square. The street it abuts was renamed to MLK Blvd by a request to the city's planning department several years ago. Later the memorial was installed at its current location in front of the Municipal Building across the street from the City-County Building and is seen by quite a number of people daily.
