The Cambrian main rail line that runs from Shrewsbury in England to Pwellhi in Wales. Much of the route is single track.

It is named after the river Mawddach, and trains going in the direction of Pwllheli cross the river estuary on a 900 yard long (820 metre) mainly wooden bridge built in 1867.

The bridge has a pedestrian toll bridge next to it and many tourists walk across the bridge from Morfa to Barmouth a seaside resort.

At one time a second railway line used to run to Ruabon, but this line closed in 1965.

When both lines were in operation the station had 4 platforms. These days there is only one platform and it operates as an unstaffed halt.

People travelling on the train have to request the guard to stop to the train. Passengers waiting on the platform have to indicate to the train driver that they wish the train to stop.

The line to Ruabon has now been converted to a cycle track and walking path. The official start is in the station car park and it is 9.5 miles long finishing in Dolgellau.

For such a small station the car park is quite large. This is because it is quicker to get to Barmouth using the rail bridge than driving inland to the nearest road bridge.

The station and the rail line are run by Aviva Trains Wales.
