The STATE CAPITOL (open 8-5:30 Mon.-Fri., 8-5 Sat., Sun.; guide), N. end of N State St., a classically styled four –story edifice built on the lines of the National Capitol, stands on a bench of the Wasatch foothills aqt the northern rim of the city, its magisterial air emphasized by the 300-foot elevation above the valley floor; it can be seen in the distance from nearly every approach to the city. The building of Corinthian lineage, was designed by Richard K. A. Keltting, Salt Lake architect. Though capped by the usual dome , it is articulated with spacious simplicity. Following the structural precedent of two wings, one for each branch of a bicameral legislature, it departs from precent in placing the House of Representatives in the west wing, the Senate in the north center, and the State Supreme Court in the east wing. Built of Utah granite on a rectangular plan, it is 404 feet long, 240 feet wide, and 285 feet high at the tip of the dome, which is covered with Utah copper. The south façade is broken only at the center by customary monumental entrance leading up to a well-proportioned Corinthian portico.
The forty-acre grounds, grass-carpeted and planted with trees and shrubs, crown Capitol Hill. North of the building are an ample parking ground, a rock garden and pool, and stone benches."--- Utah: A Guide to the State, 1941"
