CITY CEMETERY, main entrance NE. corner 4th Ave. and N St., a monument-dotted hillside area of 267 acres, is truly a city of the dead, with marked streets and avenues. Tastefully planted, mainly with evergreens, the cemetery is a haven for birds during inclement months. Bevies of California quail, their topknots bobbing, wander through the grounds, and the trees provide choir-room for hundreds of songbirds. Used as a burial ground since 1848, the area contains the graves of several Mormon Church Presidents, including those of Wilford Woodruff, Anthon Lund, and Joseph F. Smith. Burial plats of polygamous families are often fenced, with a large monument to the head of the house and lesser monuments to the various wives. The “Stranger’s plat,” NE. corner of 5th Ave. and Main St. within the cemetery, is an open area containing the unmarked graves of wanders. Adjoining the municipally-managed burial grounds are a Roman Catholic cemetery, three Jewish cemeteries, and a cemetery for Japanese Buddhists."--- Utah: A Guide to the State, 1941"
The Salt Lake City Cemetery is over 250 acres and contains 9 1/2 miles of roads. Established in 1848. It is the largest city-operated cemetery in the United States. Many religious leaders and politicians, particularly many leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) lie in the cemetery. Approximately over 120,000 persons are buried in this cemetery. The wall and entrance at the north side was a WPA project.
