All that remains of Saffron Walden Castle is the flint core of the 3 storey Norman keep. The castle was built between 1125 and 1141 by Geoffrey II de Mandeville, Earl of Essex during the civil wars between Stephen and Empress Maud. In 1158 the castle was rendered indefensible by order of Henry II. Humphrey VII de Bohun was given licence to crenellate the castle in 1346, but it is not known whether this occurred. By the 18th century most of the stone was removed.
