Here you will find Pacific Ocean beaches, rain forest valleys, glacier-capped peaks and a stunning variety of plants and animals. Roads provide access to the outer edges of the park, but the heart of Olympic is wilderness; a primeval sanctuary for humans and wild creatures alike.

Influenced by mountains and sea, Olympic has a wide range of climate conditions. About twelve feet of rain falls each year on the west-facing valleys, sustaining the temperate rain forest. The east side of the mountains lie in a "rain shadow", with only 25 inches of annual rainfall and much dryer conditions. Summers tend to be fair and warm, with high temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees. July, August and September are the driest months, with heavier precipitation during the rest of the year. While winters are mild at lower elevation, with temperatures in the 30's and 40's, snowfall can be heavy in the mountains, with accumulations of up to 10 feet common.

With three major ecosystems and almost a million acres to choose from, Olympic National Park is filled with possibilities. The Hoh Rain Forest is a place not to be missed and is a nature lovers dream.
The dominant species in the rainforest are Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock; some grow to tremendous size, reaching 312 ft in height and 23 ft in diameter. Coast Douglas-fir, Western Redcedar, Bigleaf Maple, Red Alder, Vine Maple, and Black Cottonwood are also found throughout the forest. Many native fauna also make the Olympic National Park their home, including the Pacific Tree Frog, Northern Spotted Owl, Bobcat, Cougar, Raccoon, Olympic Black Bear, Roosevelt elk, and Black-tailed Deer.
