After having toured internationally with the likes of Count Basie and B.B.King, just why Big Joe chose to settle in Burlington back in 1976 remains a mystery, but nobody complained.
The statue by Chris Sharp, based on a performance photo, shows the musician pointing out at the crowd. Joe performed regularly at Halverson’s Upstreet Cafe, in front of which he now stands with his sax to his lips, watching over the vibrant creative community he helped to establish. This commemorative sculpture is a permanent reminder of his unforgettable contribution to music in Vermont.
Joe died in 2005 of complications resulting from abdominal surgery; he was 80 years old. See his website for more info.
