In October 1986, the Korean War Veterans Memorial was approved by Congress. In June 1992, George Bush broke ground for the memorial. In July 1995, the memorial was dedicated by President Bill Clinton and Kim Young Sam, President of the Republic of Korea.
The Korean War Veterans Memorial is in the shape of a triangle intersecting a circle. The circle contains a reflecting pool. At the base of the triangle is a forest of trees, from which American soldiers are coming. The soldiers are headed home, represented by an American Flag at the apex of the triangle. To the left of the pathway is the United Nations Wall, a low wall listing the names of the 22 countries contributing to the war effort.

In the triangular field of granite strips and juniper bushes, there are nineteen stainless steel soldiers. Each weighs around 1,000 pounds and standing between 7 and 7.5 feet high. They represent a squad on patrol.
Close-ups of several of the soldiers in the field.

Along the right side of the triangle is a black granite wall with over 2,500 photographic images of trops, equipment and people involved in the war, sandblasted into the wall.

The Pool of Remembrance is located in the circular part of the Memorial. It is a shallow pool, 30 feet in diameter. Around the pool are inscriptions. One contains the simple message "Freedom is not Free".

There are nineteen soldiers in the triangular field. When reflected in the granite wall, there appear to be thirty-eight. This represents the 38th parallel, the line dividing North and South Korea.
