Replicas of the original state houses of the six New England states are found along the Avenue of the States at the Eastern States Exposition. The Massachusetts building has its counterpart, the Old State House, which is a major community resource, tourist attraction, and the oldest surviving building in Boston. Both buildings have wonderful wood sculptures of a lion and a unicorn, the British royal symbols, at their roof-lines. For artistic reasons the replica at the Eastern States Exposition places these sculptures in the front of the building; whereas, the original building in Boston has them in the back. Otherwise the buildings are strikingly similar.

The unicorn is a mythical animal portrayed as a white horse with a goat's beard and a single spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. It was mentioned first by the ancient Greeks and is mentioned in the Bible; but it took on much greater importance in the middle ages as an heraldic symbol and as a symbol of purity and grace. Belief in the physical existence of unicorns, by educated professionals, persisted into the 19th century.

There is a $5 parking fee at the Eastern States Exposition when there is an event in progress. All other times access to the grounds is free.
