On the east side of the downtown area, a large warehouse district once flourished. In recent years, it had become run-down, vacant and a complete eyesore. Then came Oklahoma City's MAPS Project which undertook the refurbishing of the downtown area, turning it into a haven for tourists and citizens alike. The Bricktown area has become a family-friendly center for recreation. Its Ballpark is the home of the RedHawks Triple AAA baseball team (coordinates shown above), and the home court of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team is within walking distance. Bass Pro Shop has a large center here, and numerous small shops and boutiques are throughout the area. Restaurants abound, as well as clubs and entertainment centers. Visitors can ride in horse-drawn coaches, or ride the motorized trolleys, or take a 40-minute narrated excursion ride down the Bricktown Canal which meanders through the area.

The streets are walk-friendly, and numerous murals and outdoor public sculptures are there to be enjoyed. On the south side of the area a large series of sculptures commemorating the Land Run of 1889 in which the city of Oklahoma City was settled, are a thrill to see. These heroic-sized sculptures include wagons, horses and the eager settlers racing into the area to stake a claim to a homestead. When completed, this grouping of sculptures will be one of the world's largest bronze sculptures, with 38 people, 34 horses, 3 wagons and additional items to make you feel like you were present on April 22, 1889.

Bricktown attracts visitors from all over the country and the world, as well as local citizens who return again and again to enjoy its offerings, year round. It is definitely worth the visit. Plan to catch a ballgame, eat a great meal in one of its restaurants, see a show in one of the clubs or events centers, or just walk around enjoying the historic buildings and feel the excitement in the air.
