We found this unusual and very cool Earth Home in Centerville, Utah. It is constructed with two large cylinders at the ends and a curved section between them.
The ground in here forms a bit of a hill sloping from the northeast to the southwest. The home was set into the hill and the excavated earth was used to cover the north (back) and the sides of the house. We estimate that at ground level on the north side, the earth cover is about ten feed thick. The difference in the grade on the north side to the grade on the south side is about 15 feet. The earth-cover slopes to the south as it reaches the upper level, about 10 feet above the north grade, covering roughly 50% of the living space. Windows are found only on the southern exposure. An extensive, sloping retaining wall was used to keep the earth cover in place.
The design of the home is unique in its own right, and the fact that earth was used to insulate half of it is unique too. We have never seen anything like it in our travels.
